<image:caption>Dawn at the Twelve Apostles stone circle. Burley moor. Yorkshire

This stone circle is thought to be about 4500 years old and was constructed during the Bronze Age. No one knows it's true purpose or who built it. The Victorian antiquarians who first came to these moors thought it was used by the Druids as a sort of clock for telling the hours or seasons.

The circle is at the junction of two important prehistoric tracks which cross the moors and one of them is believed by archaeologists to have been a major prehistoric trade-route that crossed the mid-Pennines. Around 1800 BC – the academics guess – the ring of stones took shape.

It is believed that originally there were 20 stones with a central pillar in the middle - this would have given the impression of a sort of dial with the shadow of the sun, or moor pointing to various stones in the ring.

In recent years many of the stones had fallen down and were scattered in the deep heather on the moors, but some of the local people resurrected them and the circle in this state is what we see today. It is still a beautiful place with superb views across the moors. But it is battered and bruised, and whatever Spirit once resided here is probably long departed.

Early one morning in October I carried a heavy rucksack of cameras up from the Cow and Calf car park in the pitch dark, and walked along the slippery path over the moors to the circle. The sky was starting to glow in the East which suggested that a perfect dawn was on its way. I hoped so - because I had been here before and had several false alarms, where the sky was drab and flat. But this morning the sky gave me a show with gorgeous blues, yellows and reds. There was still frost on the side of the stones and in the middle of the circle and the sun light was reflected off these. Across the valley the mist was still hovering over the little town of Otley in the distance below...and then the sun very slowly appeared over the Chevin and my camera was aligned with the sun and the capstone of the circle.

I imagined standing here perhaps four and a half millennia ago when our ancestors may have witnessed much the same scene - with the sun rising over the moors and valleys, and perhaps them giving thanks to their Gods for another day.</image:caption>

Late one afternoon I found myself with some friends exploring the old tombs East of this circle. I kept one eye on the sky and knew that the a sunset from the stone circle could be good. I set off at a good pace, leaving the others behind and arrived at the circle just as the sun was setting. The sky was perfect and I managed to capture the light hitting the side of the stones, whilst the smoke from the gamekeepers burning the heather on Denton moor across the valley drifted across the sky.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The moorland track to Little Whernside from Lodge Moor. Angram. Yorkshire Dales

Little Whernside is a mountain on the boundary between the ‘Yorkshire Dales National Park’ and the ‘Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty’. At 604 m (1,982 ft.) it is not the highest of the mountains in this area but it is one of the best. However it is very boggy on the tops, with a single path leading to the trig point.

This shot is looking towards the mountain from Angram reservoir in deepest Nidderdale.

Whernside mountain in the distance, with limestone pavement in the foreground. At 2,415 Whernside is the highest of the famous 'Three Peaks of Yorkshire' - and comprises a superb walk of 26 miles. The other peaks are Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough. It is suggested that the 'Three Peaks Challenge' should be done within 12 hours. When I did it many years ago my partner Sue and I were pretty much on our own, nowadays the Challenge has been hijacked by charities and hoards of people attempt it to raise money for good causes. Many fail.

The ancient Drovers road of Mastiles lane wanders for miles over the Yorkshire Dales. Originally a Roman marching road, it was later used by the Monks of Fountains Abbey to move their sheep to summer pastures on higher ground.

After the dissolution of the monasteries, Mastiles Lane was a Drovers Route for cattle being brought up from Scotland.

This part of the road is about 5 miles long and starts at Kilnsey and ends at Malham Tarn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These sheep followed me for about half a mile, thinking I was going to feed them. Nidderdale. Yorkshire Dales.

I was returning to the car after having had a long walk around Little Whernside in deepest Nidderdale. When I got to Scar House reservoir, I noticed that the farmer was feeding his sheep on the other side of the water. I could hear them bleating and making a noise.
I stopped to take some photographs and it was then that I heard this lot coming down from the moors and coming towards me. They knew that it was feeding time, and they thought that I must have some.
They followed me for about half a mile and only stopped when I went through a gate and couldn’t continue.
Looking back a few minutes later, I saw the farmer approaching with his quad bike loaded up with fodder for these hungry sheep – so all was well.</image:caption>

Almscliffe Crag is a prominent outcrop near Rigton in North Yorkshire. It is visible for miles around and is a haven for climbers. I cut my teeth here many, many years ago. It is also a great place to take photographs, particularly at sunrise and sunset as the views all around are superb.

On this evening, I had been sat quietly with my camera just watching the climbers. This lady had made several attempts at reaching the summit but had either slipped or not had the strength to make the final push. I was watching her and willing her to succeed.

Just as the sun was setting, she made one final push and with all her strength finally managed to reach the top. I felt her euphoria and celebrated quietly for her achievement.

Simons Seat is a prominent outcrop, with amazing views over Wharfedale and the Northern Dales.
There are several ways to get to Simons Seat – probably the most popular is from Bolton Abbey and up through the Valley of Desolation and onto the open moors – but this way can get busy.

I prefer to visit the outcrop from Barden moor – and there are several paths which will take you there. This is perhaps the least known. It is a gorgeous walk, following old tracks through beautiful heather and open moorland. Perfect for an afternoons bimble – and you probably won’t see another soul either.

<image:caption>This flue connected the Cupola Smeltmill to the Cupola chimney high on Grassington moor.

The flue is, for the most part intact and it is 1800 metres long. It winds it's way over the moors, past some ruined buildings to emerge at the base of the chimney. The Cupola mill was closed in 1882.

Near the chimney is a reservoir which was used to flush out and clean the flue. Sometimes boys would be sent up the flue to clean it out by hand.

<image:caption>Autumn and the Geese are Flying

One of the signs of Autumn that I love are the geese flying in 'V's' in the sky - honking and making a noise. In olden, more superstitious times it was believed to be a sign that the 'Wild Hunt' was on it's way.

Nowadays it is a herald that the days are getting shorter and colder and the nights longer.

It is one of the sights that I just love and I can sit and watch them along a reservoir for hours. </image:caption>

<image:caption>Follow the wall for a gorgeous walk. Yorkshire Dales

I was driving between Darnbrook and Malham Tarn one Autumn afternoon, and I saw this wall and the hill beyond.

I stopped the car in a convenient layby, and decided to follow the wall to see where it went. I crossed a stream and went further up the hill.

Unfortunately, my time was limited so after an hour or so I decided to turn back. Looking at the map I discovered that it went to Parsons Pulpit.

<image:caption>High Street in the English Lake District

It was a very wet day when my friend and I panted my way up this steep mountain. There was so much rain we could hardly see, the rain constantly dripped in our eyes and everything was soaking wet. We reached the summit and all of a sudden the clouds parted giving us an amazing view over the Lake District. We decided to take a shortcut down to the car before it started to rain again, and my mate was map reading, trying to get us down quick before we got drenched again.

Just as suddenly it started again and we crossed streams swollen with flood water and slippery paths down to the car.</image:caption>

Looking back a few minutes later, I saw the farmer approaching with his quad bike loaded up with fodder for these hungry sheep – so all was well.

<image:caption>Dead Mans Hill in Nidderdale, with the remains of a dry stone wall and stream. Yorkshire Dales

Dead Mans Hill is between Scar House and Angram reservoir in deepest Nidderdale. It is a lonely place and there is a legend associated with it. There was once a coach road going from Scotland up to the Lake District, and on the side of Dead Man Hill was a coaching Inn. Three tinkers were on the coach back from Keswick with pockets full of coin, and the coach had an overnight stop at the Inn. In the morning the tinkers couldn't be found, but their dog was on top of the hill whining and wouldn't leave.

After several days it was discovered that the tinkers were buried in a shallow grave on the slopes of the hill and their heads were missing. The landlady of the coaching inn and her daughter were tried and convicted of murder and hung at Knaresborough assizes, and the bodies of the unfortunate tinkers are buried at Middlesmoor cemetery.

It is a strange tale - there are several slight variations of it - for instance some say it was drovers and not tinkers - and the place that the women were hung changes to Knaresborough, although Skipton and York are also favourites. But I think there must be a grain of truth in the story. Otherwise, why would it be called Dead Mans Hill?

I have walked up Dead Mans Hill one evening and it is a strange place - but very boggy. A good place to bury some bodies. This scene is taken at the deserted village of Lodge between the reservoirs, with the mist over Dead Mans Hill in the distance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Twelve Apostles stone circle, Burley moor. Yorkshire

The Twelve Apostles circle is thought to have been constructed during the Bronze Age and is about 4500 years old. It's true purpose, or who built it is not known, however the Victorian antiquarians who first came to these moors thought it was used by the Druids as a sort of clock for telling the hours or seasons.

Late one afternoon I found myself with some friends exploring the old tombs East of this circle. I kept one eye on the sky and knew that the a sunset from the stone circle could be good. I set off at a good pace, leaving the others behind and arrived at the circle just as the sun was setting. The sky was perfect and I managed to capture the light hitting the side of the stones, whilst the smoke from the gamekeepers burning the heather on Denton moor across the valley drifted across the sky.

<image:caption>The long path back to home - Barden moor. North Yorkshire

This old path follows the dry stone wall on Barden moor. On the day this photograph was taken, it had rained heavy and we followed the wet, slippery slabs for miles - hoping we would make it before it rained again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The ancient Vacca Wall. Otley Chevin Country Park

This path goes along the side of the ancient Vacca Wall on the Otley Chevin Country Park. A Vacca Wall consists of large slabs aligned in such a way as to keep cattle out (or in) and is several hundreds of years old. This one is along the path and protects from a steep drop to the North. This photograph was taken on an Autumn morning with the bright sunshine illuminating the trees.</image:caption>
